Welcome to the Berkwood Hedge School website. Berkwood Hedge has been an active part of the East Bay community for over 60 years. Throughout our unique history we have been at the forefront of many educational movements and trends. From operating for 26 years as a teacher collective to becoming the first school in Alameda County to be certified as a Green Business, we are proud of our legacy as a progressive school.
Our constructivist philosophy is reflected in our dynamic and engaging integrated curriculum. The teachers at Berkwood Hedge are flexible and responsive to each student's learning style and needs. We nurture their social and emotional development as carefully as their academic growth. Above all, we strive to create an environment where all students feel safe, secure, and valued.
Berkwood Hedge is a school with a strong commitment to the community, both within our walls and beyond. Parents and families participate in every aspect of our school, serving on committees, volunteering in classrooms, and coordinating special events. Our teachers and students are actively involved with the world beyond the school through classroom service learning projects. Thanks to our small size, students and their families quickly build a wonderful, supportive network for themselves.
